My heart breaks as my internship at Toast comes to an end. As I look back on this semester, I realize how much I have learned! Toast not only taught me about event planning, but also inspired me to continue pursuing this dream and to change my career path completely. Kim and Tamara encouraged me and showed me the joy and hard work that go into this profession.

One of my favorite things that I will be taking with me is the fact that you have to love what you’re doing.  Especially in this profession, you HAVE to love it.  If you don’t like working with people, being creative, or working hard, then this is clearly the wrong thing for you.  Kim smiles every day.  She laughs, she connects with people, and she always gives everything 100%.  Those are some of the key things that help her events be so successful.  She gets to know her clients, she personally connects with them, and she works so hard to make their special day everything they want and more.  She can mentally picture what the event will look like and she is willing to take those steps along the way to make it happen.  I am so beyond impressed and have a whole new outlook on what this business looks like.

I have loved this internship so much that I have actually decided to stop pursuing a teaching career and graduate a year early.  This next year, I will stay here in Santa Barbara to work and hopefully do some event work on the side.  I would love to be able to continue learning about this profession and the many aspects that go into it.  I really loved the ability to work with weddings, but I would also love to explore other events as well.

Through this whole experience, I had the most fun with all of the behind the scenes work that went into the events.  The arts and crafts and creative sides are so important!  I have always loved art projects and things that require a bit more than just printing out a paper and calling it good.  This internship gave me some great opportunities to explore more of that!  I was able to put welcome baskets together, cut ribbon for napkin details, and cover pears in glitter to act as escort cards.  All of these things helped me to branch out in my artistic world and explore a more hands-on creativity.  I always loved getting to see how it was incorporated into an event!

I also have found a new love for flowers!  First off, I learned that I really don’t know much of anything about flowers.  They require so much care and take so much work!  They have to constantly be in water, cannot be in a hot atmosphere, and you have to be careful with their petals because they can bruise! I mean, who knew, right?? I even got the opportunity to put together my first bouquet and some arrangements to accent the centerpieces.  The key is to just be creative!

Through all of this, I have found new passions and a place that I fit in.  I like the busyness and when the to-do list is packed.  I enjoy running from place to place and having a little pressure to make an event perfect.  I am really excited to see where else I can go in this industry and I really hope that I will be able to continue helping with events.  What could possibly be better than helping plan someone’s dream wedding or dream party?!

Cheers to a future with lots of unknowns, but even more possibilities!

Time has flown by since my first official wedding as an intern with TOAST (How is it January already?!), but it will not soon be forgotten. That day, any illusions I had of this job being glamorous quickly melted away under the hot Ojai sun as I literally ran laps around Casa Elar…setting place cards, tying ribbon to chairs, gathering lavender, sitting on the floor tying the lavender into bundles with hand-dyed silk ribbon, placing the bundles of lavender on the plates for the reception, lighting candles, repositioning lavender as it blew away, re-lighting candles as they blew out in the wind, taking pictures of guests for the Polaroid guest book… safe to say I gained a whole new appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work that goes into weddings!!

But WOW, was the end result worth the blisters, sunburn, and sweat!

It was so rewarding seeing all of Tamara and Kim’s planning come to life in what is still one of the most gorgeous weddings I have ever seen. I loved all the blues and whites and lovely little details that hinted at stories about the bride and groom.

Even four months later, I cannot stop looking at the photos!

Happy December everyone!!

With the holidays quickly approaching, some of us (ME!) are more excited than others (may or may not be Kim). Regardless, neither of us could resist throwing an appreciation lunch for our amazing interns and turning it into a holiday party!!

We spent the morning decorating and cooking with Christmas music on in the background, of course. We decided to use a few more pops of color than the traditional red and green by incorporating pink poinsettias, pomegranates, pink taper candles, and rosé!

Kim made one of her favorite dishes, roasted green beans with hazelnut pesto, topped with crème fraîche and pomegranate seeds! It was so delicious!

TOAST Santa Barbara_0217We tucked miniature pinecones into a runner of winter greens and added a sprig to each napkin. And let’s talk about these white linen napkins with silver trim from DIANI Living!!!

I made apple pie, using my family’s recipe, covered with Christmas tree cutouts and topped with a star! It may have looked more recognizable before it was cooked, but it tasted like Christmas nonetheless!!

And last but not least, a huge thank you to our two sweet interns this past semester! You’ll be seeing a post from both Kristen & Claire on the blog soon as they reflect on some of their experiences as interns over the last few months. We can’t wait to hear what they think!!

You guys, I turned 40.  4-0!!!!!  I know they say 40 is the new – whatever, but there is a strange psychological aversion to turning 40.  Everyone I talk to over the age of 40 says the same thing.  

To help with my general horrible attitude directed toward my birthday (that lasted for months leading up to the actual day), amazing Tamara and the ever talented, Christy Parker conspired with my crazy friend Uriah and ever-patient husband to throw the most beautiful birthday dinner ever at one of my favorite Santa Barbara restaurants, Sama Sama Kitchen.

Christy Parker went above and beyond – hand-dying napkins to match the hues of the most incredibly gorgeous flowers.   I had recently returned from a trip to Bali with my family, so tropical goodness topped all the tables.  Hibiscus and orchids made perfect partners for dahlias and garden roses.  Pineapple printed menus (created by CP of course) were set at each place setting.

Tamara, Uriah and CP transitioned the back patio at Sama Sama in record time to welcome my closest friends.  It was an exquisite evening surrounded by my favorite people in the whole world.  My boys even showed up as a surprise to give Mom a special toast and of course, just in time for cake.  I don’t know where Amber over at Enjoy Cupcakes comes up with her cake flavors, but the Cucumber Lime cake is phenomenal.

Thank you, my crazy, dearest friends, for such a sweet celebration.  I loved every last detail and more importantly loved sharing my birthday with you.

P.S.   40 isn’t so bad, well, except when I am trying to go for a run.

I feel like I say this every blog post, but we cannot believe how quickly this year has flown by! It has been almost an entire year since this beautiful wedding up in Ojai with Love This Day Events.
